We all need to know vocabulary, but too often we see a new word and then forget it later.
The Language Centre of the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology has some great pages of tips & strategies to help you really learn and really remember English vocabulary. I've added this link to the Vocabulary page in ESL Links.

At the moment, I'm delayed with updating the blog because two things have come along almost at the same time.
First, I moved apartments, so dealing with the new apartment is taking up a lot of time: packing, unpacking, decorating etc. Also a friend is visiting from another country, so I'm spending most of my free time with her, showing her around the city and entertaining her. But soon I'll get around to making more posts and also uploading that info on common mistakes I mentioned in earlier posts. A student recently notified me that one of the ESL links listed on my site is blocked in mainland China. Thanks for letting me know. :)
It's EnglishDaily626.com, which I posted in Conversation Issues because it has a great list of common mistakes in English made by Chinese speakers, and how to correct them. I contacted the webmaster of that site, mentioning the problem and asking permission to repost that useful info on common mistakes. They responded very quickly and kindly gave me said permission. So over the next few weeks (hopefully) I'll repost that info here on my website. I've added a couple of new articles to the Conversation Issues section of this website. You can access them from the links below or by hovering over the Conversation Issues button in the menu on the left of the page.
I'm still moving things from my old website to this one. Today I created here the page Telephone English, with links for info, advice, exercises and listening practice for making telephone calls, mostly focused on business phone calls.
I deleted a couple of out-of-date links, and added some new ones like BBC Learning Talking Business. Because I've only just started this website, please be patient: I'm still experimenting, moving things, adding things etc.
Hopefully it will settle down in a month or two. :D Just created my page on Weebly, as I only just found that my students in China couldn't see my existing pages on PBworks and Blogspot; the Communist government blocks those domains.
I googled up a web page with some handy links: How to Check If Your Website Is Blocked In China or Not Using the links there, I confirmed that my PBworks and Blogspot pages were not accessible in China. I've also confirmed that this Weebly website is. For now. |
